The Suite Life - August 2023

There’s nothing like sport to bring Aussies together. At TLS, we’re absolutely buzzing with enthusiasm over the FIFA Women’s World Cup, avidly following matches, sharing our (highly unreliable) amateur commentary, making bold predictions and getting super invested in all the triumphs and heartbreaks. I don’t know about you, but I’ve noticed a distinctive shift in the collective mood since this exciting event kicked off. It feels like the Women’s World Cup is exactly what we needed to lift our spirits.

Whether you’re barracking for the Matildas or throwing your support behind one of our fellow international teams, it’s so important we all get on board with the World Cup. Women’s sport has been notoriously undervalued for far too long, so by getting along to matches, buying merch and helping make this tournament one for the history books, we’re sending a message that women’s sport matters. Let’s get amongst it!

On a completely different note, this week is World Breastfeeding Week, a campaign highlighting the benefits of breastfeeding for both mums and bubs. It’s a subject that GP Dr Preeya Alexander fully supports. “Breastfeeding has so many benefits for both Mum and baby,” she says. “As I discuss in my book Eat, Sleep, Play, Love, while there are many benefits to breastfeeding it doesn’t always work for everyone and there are other options like formula that can be considered. It’s my job to support patients to make informed decisions without any judgement or stigma.”

That’s all from me this month. Go the Matildas!

I, and R U OK? Day is now a major fixture on the national calendar. This year’s event is just around the corner (September 14), so we recommend you lock in experts and finalise your plans sooner rather than later.

If you’re planning to host an event, TLS has got you covered. As leaders in health messaging, we’ve observed that people are getting better at asking ‘are you ok?’ but may not know what to do if there’s a ‘no’ in response. For that reason, we strongly encourage organisations and managers to help their staff and customers learn how to better manage mental-health conversations. Here are some of our experts who can help – email us for bookings:

  • Dr Tim Sharp – Positive Psychologist (aka Dr Happy)

  • Dr Preeya Alexander – GP

  • Leanne Hall – Psychologist

  • Dr Kieran Kennedy - Psychiatrist

  • Dr Gina Cleo – Habit-Change Scientist

  • Mark Mathieson – Eco Psychologist

  • Dr Michela Sorensen – GP

In other talent news, congratulations to Ellie Cole for being appointed to the Board of Directors of The Collective Drive, which creates opportunities for underrepresented communities in motorsport. As a former Paralympian and long-time advocate for diversity and inclusion, Ellie brings a wealth of experience to this space, and we know she’ll drive big changes. It’s been a busy time for Ellie, who absolutely killed it in the 9Network commentary team for the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan last month and is currently in Trinidad & Tobago undertaking her role as General Manager of the Youth Commonwealth Games team.

Socks and jocks are out, books are in. That’s how we roll on Father’s Day (heads up: it’s only four weeks away!), and here are our top picks for Dad this year:

  • The Manual – a handy guide to men’s health by Scott Henderson and Dr Kieran Kennedy. A not-too-subtle hint about the need for Dad to take better care of himself.

  • This Old Van – showcasing Michael and Carlene Duffy’s renovation of their famed vintage vans. Fingers crossed it inspires Dad to take on a reno project of his own.

  • Eat, Sleep, Play, Love – a brilliant guide to parenting in the first two years of a child’s life, penned by Dr Preeya Alexander. Perfect for new or soon-to-be dads.
